Kamala Harris

Kamala Devi Harris born October 20, 1964) is an American politician and lawyer who is currently the 49th vice-president of the United States. Kamala Devi Harris is the first female elected vice president, and she is also the highest-ranking female officer in American history. She is a member and former US senator who represents California. Harris was born in Oakland. Harris received her law degree from Howard University. Harris started her career in the Alameda County District Attorney's Office, before being recruited to the San Francisco District Attorney's Office and later the City Attorney of San Francisco's office. In 2003 she was appointed district attorney of San Francisco. In 2010 Harris was appointed Attorney General of California and re-elected in 2014. Harris was the junior member of the United States Senate from California between 2017 and 2021. Harris beat Loretta Sanchez in the 2016 Senate election, becoming the 2nd African American woman and the first South Asian American to serve in the United States Senate. As a senator, Harris advocated for federal de-scheduling of healthcare, and cannabis legalization, a path to citizenship for undocumented immigrants as well as the DREAM Act which bans assault weapons. She gained a national profile for her pointed questioning of Trump administration officials in Senate hearings, including Trump's second Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh who was accused of sexual assault.
